Right before "Saturday Night Live" debuted in 1975, Dan Aykroyd thought to himself, "If we die tonight, it's all over. I may as well get into the snowplow business." I suppose we've all had those moments, but perhaps not on that scale. This leads me to the question, "If you could not have a career in accounting or finance, what would you do for a living?"

Cop
I always wanted to be a cop...probably still could but you know how life goes...you make a series of decisions and eventually you've gone down a path which makes the tradeoffs unreasonable. Great question to consider though....if anybody wants to do something else and they have evaluated all the tradeoffs (hoping that money and power are low priority items on the list) and still would rather be doing it...I would always encourage them to do it....life's too short and we all spend a lot of it at work.

Then and Now
When I was younger, I wanted to be a professional baseball umpire. I love the game, and I couldn't hit a curveball. Nowadays, I would be a history teacher. I think it's important to remember what has happened and by whom, so that we can learn from it and hopefully be better for it. Kevin O., CPA, Texas
Travel Agent
I was a travel agent and managed a travel agency branch for several years while going back to school for an accounting degree. Good travel benefits, but the pay is low and the occupation is not as flexible or as stable as accounting.
What would I do if I wasn't a CPA?
I have two jobs I'd consider: I'd like to be a tour guide somewhere in Spain, Portugal, Italy, or Great Britain, helping people get the most value out of their destination vacation. I might also like to be the curator of a natural history museum because I have such an interest in history, archeology, and geology. If those are unavailable, maybe a photographer for Natinal Geographic.
Librarian
I spend a lot of my volunteer time helping build, organize, and maintain library collections. I would pursue a career in that field if accounting and tax jobs were no longer an option. Andrew S., CPA, NJ
