Q&A (back to index)
accounting degree online
Posted by ahlsseth on 03/09/2009 - 18:02
So I have noticed the advertisements for the Keller Graduate School of Management and I have to ask, would any Big 4 accounting firms actually hire someone with a master's degree from Devry? How is an online progam like this perceived? Does anyone have any insights? Thanks.

This is a tough question!
Hello Seth,
I have seen your situation before and to be honest it is tough to get into the Big 4 with an online degree. I personally do not believe that it is any different than most institutions, but there is a preception out there. I have recruited for Big 4 firms in the past and they do take into consideration your education.
Here are two options that I would consider.
1)Do some research and make sure that you could easily transfer credits from the online instution with a local college. then you could go ahead and get started online and when need be switch a finish your degree at a local recognized institution.
2)If you did alittle research, you would be amazed and surprised and the number of credible universities that do offer distant education. For example, I have a former candidate who got his accounting degree form Liberty University all online and then started in public accounting. They did not know whether or not he was an on-campus student or a distant learner.
Hope that helps! I love helping accounting professionals grow their careers. You can find more free infor and advice on my blog at: http://www.CPACareerCoach.com

Online school
Seth A,
I myself am in an online accounting program (Bachelor of Science) with Western Governors University, and I'm hoping and praying that online degrees are taken seriously by the "Big 4" !!
