Divorce - Recession Style

Not all couples will be celebrating a happy Valentine’s day. The economic crises has proven to be too much of a strain and pushed some couples to divorce. Whether they get to divorce court because of the economic conditions or for some other reason, the economy is playing a huge role in the timing of divorce.

Last month Bloomberg reported that divorce is getting hard as the recession cuts asset values. This is especially true in cases where stock in a closely held company is a major marital asset. In these cases there are winners and there are losers. In the typical situation where one spouse is active in the business and the other is not, the “in-spouse” may be pushing for divorce to take advantage of the lower asset values while the “out-spouse” tries to delay a divorce in the hopes that the business will recover.
