Angelo State University professor wins Outstanding Educator award

Dr. Norman Sunderman, CPA and accounting professor at Angelo State University, was honored recently with the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants’ (TSCPA) 2008 Outstanding Accounting Educator Award.

At a ceremony held Oct. 24 during the TSCPA Accounting Education Conference, Sunderman received a plaque and a $1,000 award provided by the TSCPA Accounting Education Foundation.

The statewide TSCPA Outstanding Accounting Educator Awards honor Texans who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and who have distinguished themselves through active service to the accounting profession. Criteria for judging includes instructional innovation, student motivation, the pursuit of learning opportunities for students, involvement in student and professional accounting organizations, and research accomplishments and publications.

Sunderman has had 39 years of college teaching experience and focuses his efforts on student learning by combining his lectures with the Socratic teaching method. His students are encouraged to participate and study in various ways, through homework quizzes and in-class problems and participation. He also believes that foreign travel broadens one’s perspective and plans to take 20 students to Germany and the Netherlands next summer and additional travel plans are in the process of completion.

Since 2000, he has worked to create modern teaching and learning facilities for the university as a whole. He has now supervised a complete remodeling in three classrooms, as well as the installation of new multimedia equipment in two additional classrooms and he is currently working to completely remodel four more classrooms.

Sunderman has worked with publishers to create better textbooks and supplements and he has written articles and papers on a variety of accounting topics for various magazines and quarterlies. He is also a member of the Texas Society of CPAs and is affiliated with the San Angelo chapter.
