Minnesota May Publish Convicted Preparers List

The Minnesota legislature is considering an all-encompassing collection of tax measures with several provisions of interest to enrolled agents. Under the bill, MNSF 610/HF 496, E@lert reports, tax returns would have to include the taxpayer's date of birth and – if prepared by a paid preparer – the identification number the preparer includes on federal tax returns.

The legislation also would require the publishing of lists of tax preparers who have been convicted of any of a number of different violations of state law (failure to file, failure to pay, understatement of liability, etc.). The bill was introduced in the House and Senate and was amended in the House Taxation Committee.
