Alex Somos, co-founder of Juice Inc., and Eagle's Flight, learned this lesson while spending many years leading an international training organization and working closely alongside his corporate clients. His North American consulting firm works to boost employee energy and retention within companies that creates a culture of productivity by building communication and collaboration -- all of which deliver increased profitability within the organization. Somos has some advice and tips to help employees feel good about their work and for creating a high-performing work environment that makes it easier to achieve results. 1. "Corporate Will" is the key to resolving business issues. It is the resolve from the top of the organization to see the results through to the finish. When employees understand the measurable objectives of a company, like safety or productivity, the leaders are able to establish the systems and processes that model, measure, support and reward the desired outcomes. 2. The organization's quality is directly related to the quality of the internal conversation within. Conservation is the "operating system" of the organization, says Samos. "Recruitment runs off training conversations and revenue runs off sales conversations. The more time an organization invests into this 'operating system,' the greater return they will see." 3. The symptoms of "Corporate ADD" must be recognized and addressed. Distractions, disorganization, plus a lack of focus, all lead to difficulty in delivering results. When these symptoms are recognized, the organization process can begin to create focus in the results they are trying to achieve. 4. A "Feeling Economy" will generate significant bottom line results. If people feel first and think second Samos states, "The first response from people is generally an emotional one." He says, "As they interact with you, they are internally assessing, 'Do I feel put down? Respected? Listened to?' The ability for managers and leaders to understand the feelings economy can create unprecedented results." 5. A "Pull" focus rather than a "Push" mentality is important in meetings. "Logic and passion are not enough to convey a point of view," notes Samos. "That's because people tolerate your conclusions, and act on their own. When you try to push your agenda onto someone else, you don't always get the results you intend." By pulling out the point of view of another person, it provides the opportunity to form a message in a way that will be truly accepted. 6. Energy is what gets things accomplished -- it is the best source of employee productivity and it provides the ability to do work; in a 30-day period. Employee knowledge and experience grow incrementally, but it is the personal level of energy that produces the large spikes in productivity. The key to achieving engaged employees and higher performance is tapping that energy. 7. An understanding of the "Bigger Reality" creates content and multiplies results. "The higher up a person becomes in an organization, the less they hear about what's really going on," says Samos. "CEOs rarely hear the candid truth, and if they do, it is sanitized and couched, without the real message getting through." If truth and reality are encouraged, it will help to create clarity, speed up processes, eliminate misunderstandings and yield unexpected results.
