Rising Threat to Smart Phone Security

A new report finds a steady rise in security attacks on vulnerable mobile phones and predicts that mobile security products will be installed on 247 million, nearly 8 percent of the total, mobile phones by 2011.

Identity theft, and mobile viruses and malware, combined with state legislation and corporate governance and the increased user dependence for critical data storage and delivery to mobile phones, will ensure installation of security products, according to the Juniper Research report.

Alan Goode, author of the report, says, "Initially driven by the data hungry mobile business user who has seen the benefits of data services such as email, predominantly on their Blackberry devices, we will see mobile security products go mainstream by late 2008/early 2009, resulting in a doubling of revenues from 2008 to 2010."

Report highlights include:

1. Mobile phone theft will rise with a forecast of almost 4 percent of mobile phones stolen annually, despite the efforts of police and phone operators.

2. Mobile phone security product revenues will rise to almost $5 billion by 2011 from products including anti-virus, VPN, data and file encryption and mobile identity management applications.

3. The secure mobile content sector -- anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware and content filtering -- will be the largest market sector, at 40 percent.

4. The revenues from products for mobile data and file encryption is predicted to outdistance the PC market by 2011.

5. $268 million will be contributed from Mobile Biometric solutions of the $1.36 billion total mobile identity and access management market by 2011.

According to Richard Clarke, former cyber security advisor to President Bush, criminals and hackers will turn their attention to unprotected mobile phones which are more likely to be lost or stolen. The problem will only grow with mobile phones beginning to out-ship PC's in 2006 by a five to one ratio.
