Hundreds of certified public accountants (CPAs) and volunteers will take the day off from work in service of others across the Commonwealth. It's all part of CPA Day of Service on Friday, September 20, 2013. CPA firms and individual CPAs across Virginia will unite together for volunteer activities of their choice. Hosted by the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA), this single day of volunteer service represents the CPA profession's ongoing commitment to serving the communities where its professionals live and work.
Hundreds of people volunteer statewide each year and work at volunteer locations encompassing a variety of organizations, including both indoor and outdoor projects. Some organizations with CPA volunteers include the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program, the National Capitol Area Food Bank, the Williamsburg James City Community Action Agency, the Valley Program for the Aging, Meals on Wheels, Nottoway Park, and many more.
"Certified public accountants have a lot to offer the public as a profession and have the ability to give back to the community as individuals and citizens as well," said Jim Shepherd, CPA, of Verus Financial Partners in Richmond and chair of the VSCPA Board of Directors. To spotlight the value CPAs offer the Commonwealth's citizens and commerce, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell signed a proclamation recognizing September 15-21, 2013, as Virginia CPA Week.
The VSCPA hopes the commemorative week, along with the CPA Day of Service, will build awareness of the significant growth and importance of the CPA profession and the VSCPA, which now serves more than 11,000 members. CPAs are trusted advisors to businesses, organizations, and individuals, helping them make sound financial decisions, and this week highlights the CPA profession's important contributions to Virginia citizens and communities.
Members of the media are invited to visit the volunteer sites to photograph or interview volunteers. Reporters interested in attending should contact VSCPA Public Relations Manager David Bass at (804) 612-9440.
