CCH Small Firm Services (SFS) wrapped up its inaugural user conference October 26 with a look toward the challenges and opportunities of the future. Over 150 attendees spent two days focusing on the ways changes in laws, professional requirements, and technology are impacting the way tax and accounting professionals provide value to the their clients and market themselves and their firms.

"It is very easy to talk in an abstract sense about the ways changes in technology are impacting our industry and the ways tax and accounting professionals serve their clients," said Rusty Tillman, SFS vice president of Customer Experience, "but it moves quickly from abstract concepts to real-world challenges when you can sit with your customers and have extended discussions about the day-to-day realities of the changes that are occurring. We can take that input and use it to craft better solutions for our customers and their clients."
SFS President Jeff Gramlich set the theme for the conference at the opening session, focusing on the changes in the tax and accounting field over the years and on ways firms could make themselves "future ready." "It is not enough," said Gramlich, "to adopt today's best practices. You have to embrace, accept, and adopt the changes that are on the horizon, some of which will make perfect sense to you, and some of which you cannot even conceive of today."
Attendee feedback has been positive, with specific praise on the uniqueness of the conference. "This event has exceeded my expectations! It's been more than just a learning opportunity; it gave me the chance to get to know the SFS family and to form attachments. I look forward to attending next year," said Hudson Etienne, EA.
SFS will announce the location of next year's user conference in the first quarter of 2013; the conference will be held in the fall.
