It’s the Monday night after the largest gathering of QuickBooks ProAdvisors, and I’m still suffering from my Scaling New Heights hangover.

What is it, exactly – the SNH Hangover? It’s the dazed feeling one gets after spending 4 days at Joe Woodard’s intense annual training event. Since I’ve only ever been there as a presenter, I can’t speak to how an attendee must feel – but I suspect it must be worse!

In the end, it’s A Good Thing to feel like this. For attendees, the choices available for training tracks are amazing. So many things to choose from – inventory management options, CRM boot camps, marketing strategies, productivity and mobile add-ons… And then there’s the certification training.

My Radio Free QuickBooks co-host (and best friend), Dawn Brolin, taught Advanced QuickBooks Certification. Three days, consisting of 8 hardcore sessions geared towards helping attendees get through the Advanced Certification exam. An exam that made me cry when I took it. I cannot express how in awe I am of this woman for presenting this material in such a way that everyone in her session cheers for her and adores her (almost) as much I do.

This year she brought “Team Brolin” shirts for everyone – a brilliant idea that brought the group together like no other presenter I’ve ever seen has done.

Here’s what Dawn had to say about the experience:

Teaching the ProAdvisor Advanced Certification was an amazing experience. With approximately 80 attendees consistently throughout the eight session track, we focused on studying and utilizing the recording and guide available in the course locker as the best resource once they left the training class. Attendees were also offered additional “best practices” tips from both myself and fellow attendees. Nuggets of information not related to the course were also provided which kept the class interested and leaving with more than what they came for. The feedback received thus far directly from attendees was that the class was informative, motivational, and all around filled with information and excitement. During my preparation for the class I focused on the details that I felt were the most difficult areas to understand while not assuming that the attendees would recall some of what might be easier topics. This was a true pleasure to work with the attendees who proved to have a very diverse amount of experience with QuickBooks. Everyone left with confidence and a well-defined plan for success in passing the QuickBooks ProAdvisor Advanced Certification exam.

I had the unique experience of teaching QuickBooks Online Certification training; this was unchartered territory because the first QBO Certification was just launched last fall. After writing the original training courses for QBO US, Singapore and Canada, I also had the privilege of writing, reviewing and recording much of the training material. For those of you that don’t know me, QBO is sort of my jam

Since the exam was built from the ground up so that it could be taken from a computer or a mobile device, I encouraged my attendees to answer the questions as we went through the course. As usual, I was met with a few skeptics – and I like to think I met the challenge to change their minds, considering at last count, about 20-25% of my attendees had let me or someone at the Intuit booth know they had complete certification before they even left the conference.

One woman, Karen Hensen, started the day of training with a direct order! Check out my interview with her at the end of the day.

I enjoyed every minute of teaching this group. Wonderful insights, pointed questions and great suggestions made the training very interactive, and I even made them laugh a few times. The best part of the training was our “QBO Jeopardy” game to recap what we’d learned. Things got VERY heated!

I want to close by mentioning what Scaling New Heights is: it’s probably the best collection of QuickBooks related training and exhibitors that you can get. But it’s also about the networking, making connections. Meeting the companies in the exhibit hall, seeing old friends and making new ones, learning new software tricks, or about new software in general. It’s one of the events that many of the QuickBooks ProAdvisors (and QuickBooks users in general) look forward to each year, and I’m so thankful to have had the honor of being able to share what I know with the people that attend my sessions – but most of all, to learn new things from them!
