As another summer comes to a close soon (but not too soon!!!),new recruits fresh out of college will be gracing our offices right after Labor Day. Some of these newbies will be green in the office environment. What advice can be given to these newcomers? Lots....
Don't be afraid of saying "I don't know". No one know everything. It's better to ask questions than to spin your wheels (and someone else's) and waste time. This is the time to learn.
Never, EVER, gossip. It's simply not necessary. Nothing is gained by it except two hurt careers and mistrust. My mom always used to say "even if you know, you don't know".
Share the credit. There is enough praise to go around.
Ask for help. If you think you are in over your head, you are. No one will think any less of you. Ask. For. Help
Don't discuss salary. This will create ill will with your fellow newbies. Some things are better left unsaid.
You won't like everyone. And if you don't, don't let it show. You never know when you may come across that person in the future. Never burn a bridge.
Let things go. You may not have gotten a project you wanted, etc. Holding a grudge is a sure fire way to get you nowhere fast.
Don't gloat. No one likes a know-it-all. Just say thanks and move on.
These ideas don't only work for the newbies. They work for everyone in the office. Next time you want to make a face at someone or something, draw a page from the book of "wisdom".
