As summer begins to wind down, I’m happy to be able to have this opportunity to talk about how small businesses can be more productive and ultimately profitable. In working with more than 35,000 small business customers through SurePayroll, an online payroll services provider, I hear a lot about what they go through on a daily basis. I hope to be able to share some of that knowledge with you on this blog.
Perhaps one of the toughest times of the year to keep productivity high is right now. People are either going on or coming back from vacations, and it’s hard to stay on task. Still, it’s essential for employees to get that time away to refresh and recharge their batteries.
There’s a few different ways you can make due during the dog days of summer:
- Train other employees on tasks they’re not accustomed to doing. It will make you better prepared when someone is out sick or on vacation.
- Use outside vendors. It’s a good time to test outside help to see if they can help you be more efficient when you’re in a crunch and need things done quickly that your staff might not be able to handle.
- Take note of the value of your vacationing employees. Do things get disorganized or chaotic when they’re gone? Is it much smoother when they get back? Don’t take for granted how important these people are to your business.
August can sometimes feel like a hot and lazy month, but we all know you can’t ever really afford to get lazy with your business. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the final days of summer. You just have to have the right plans in place to keep the wheels turning.
