As I return from the joint conference – The Forum for Women in Accounting and the Forum for Recruiting and Retention - I have takeaways aplenty.
Some of the biggest names in the industry were there presenting – Allan Koltin, Gary Boomer, Gale Crosley, Rita Keller, Gary Shamis – and what a huge honor and thrill it was to be able to attend this wonderful conference. I would love to share some of the nuggets of information with you.
Rebecca Ryan of Next Generation Consulting kicked off the conference by speaking at a pre-conference session on how to make effective presentations. For those of you who have heard Rebecca speak, you know how energetic and inspirational she is. For those of you who haven’t, I urge you to visit her website and sit in on a webinar – FANTASTIC!!!
So, how DOES one deliver a great presentation?
Whether a formal or informal presentation, once the key point is understood, the rest falls into place. The key point is Emotion + Information = Communication. We are all constantly “on stage”, whether we are presenting to our managing partner, staff, potential new hires, etc. The common denominator is…….People.
Here are some of the rules to keep in mind:
Rule 1: It all begins with them, not you
- Who are you presenting to, and what do you want them to think, feel, do
Rule 2: Stories rule. Stats Rot
- People identify with stories, not stats. Well, most people anyway.
Rule 3: Show, don’t tell
- Share stories with your audience. Show them pictures. Often a single picture can speak a thousand words.
Rule 4: When sh8t happens, improvise
- Go with whatever happens. Smile. Joke about it and move on.
