Amidst a certain amount of controversy, the AICPA and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants have launched a new designation for global management accountants, the CGMA (Chartered Global Management Accountant). The designation is available to members of both organizations. The credential is to be issued based on experience rather than specific education and an examination. Jeffrey Thomson, Institute of Management Accountants president, recently told AccountingWEB, "We have some serious questions about the designation," and he questioned the length of the grandfathering period and the fact that AICPA members qualify without passing a test.

Obvious intrusive foray into CMA territory. Just follow the $$$$.

What these people don't understand is, if every other CPA has a CGMA, then what is the value of the CGMA? We CPA already has an edge over people without a CPA so really what is the point of getting the CGMA? You cant compete with someone who has a CPA and a CMA due to the fact the the CMA is a real certificate. If you are a CPA, would you go for the certificate that everyone has with no value (CGMA) or actually challenge your self and learn something real (CMA).
