According to a recent survey by Listserv, from 2009 to 2010, e-mail use by seniors rose 28%. During the same period, e-mail use by teenagers declined 59%. I think it's great that so many seniors are now active this way. I'm 45 years old and my grandfather uses e-mail every day! Of course, regardless of your age, escaping e-mail during the accounting workday is virtually impossible.
Please comment about your own e-mail usage (you don't have to use your real name if you don't want to). We're especially interested in your opinions about how you handle e-mail on the job, including billing for e-mail time, dealing with work e-mails on smart phones after hours and anything else you care to say.

I SPEND ONE HOUR AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH DAY TRYING TO CLEAR MY INBOX!

On the advice of my IT person I finallybroke down and purchased a crackberry after loosing email during a systems crash. It's a love-hate relationship as I find myself cheking email during off-hours. I seldom respond but have on occassion. I don't like being that tied to work during off hours but sometimes it prepares me for what to expect when I return to the office. I'm still debating the benefits.

Email on smartphones has most of us connected 24/7. Yes, even in my sleep I hear the inbox chime and at least stir a little. I think it's very unhealthy and is upsetting our work/life/love balance in the worst way. Sure, we could just shut off our email, but it's really not clear if we're expected to monitor it after hours. Most things can wait until the next day, but the need to constantly check new messages for emergencies is maddening when co-workers are doing the same thing and working around the clock.

E-mail will never go out the window.

Hint: Don't email a colleague expecting an answer while he/she is en route to the office. You may be asked to pay for car repairs!
