Alan is a sole practitioner based in Central Ohio. He made a career change at 40 after working as a journalist for more than 15 years. Alan started his practice in May 2010 and currently focuses on not-for-profit organizations, individuals and small businesses. He has helped a number of nonprofits obtain their tax-exempt status and assisted others with their audit, compliance and tax needs. Alan has overcome many obstacles, and has spent the past 11 years primarily as an auditor. He also has worked on audits of financial institutions, closely-held businesses and began his second career as an ABL field examiner.

I had actually looked forward to the day the IRS let me renew my preparer identification number. Don't ask me why, perhaps I couldn't wait to get it over with. I can recall the number of preparers who complained about the PTIN process.

The IRS is making an effort to help employers comply with worker classification and settle payroll tax issues from past years at a reduced cost. The Voluntary Classification Settlement Program ("VCSP") was launched today (Wednesday). Under the program, many businesses, nonprofits and government entities will be able to properly treat their workers – currently classified as nonemployees or independent contractors - as employees.

Early this (Monday) morning I called the IRS in regard to a notice regarding a client inquiry. The phone line picked up, but there was silence followed by a dial tone.

For those of you who missed it, the IRS made its first additions to the list of organizations that had their tax-exempt status revoked. In Ohio, for example, the number of organizations swelled 17 percent.

Never in my life have so many banks not wanted my money. About a month ago, I had agreed to become treasurer for a nonprofit organization. My first task was to open a new set of bank accounts. Why the old accounts were closed was anyone’s guess.
