Reap What You Sow

From time to time we all get those e-mails from our friends….if we don’t send to 10 people in the next 10 minutes…blah blah blah. And then once in a while, we get one that stops and makes us think. My friend Gail sent me an e-mail entitled “A very worthwhile thought on friendship”. As you read on, I think it can apply not only to friendships, but work relationships and just everyday life.

The premise of this e-mail is as follows: There was a successful businessman looking for a successor to take over the reigns of his business. Instead of choosing his children or his directors, he chose to put his young executives to the test.
 
The CEO gave each of his executives a seed, told them to plant it, water it, and then come back in a year’s time with what they had grown from that seed. He would then judge the plants, and choose his successor.
 
Within that year’s time, the plants flourished. That is, all but one of the executive’s, who just couldn’t get the seed to grow no matter what he did. When the year was up, all of the executives brought in beautiful plants. The one man, whose seed didn’t grow, brought in the empty pot….embarrassed.
 
Turns out, the seeds the CEO gave out were dead, and impossible for them to grow anything.  While the others substituted the seed that was given to them for another in order to be crowned successor, it was the one man with his empty pot and his honesty, that prevailed and was named successor to the business. 
 
So why this story? 
 
* If you plant honesty, you will reap trust

* If you plant goodness, you will reap friends

* If you plant humility, you will reap greatness

* If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment

* If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective

* If you plant hard work, you will reap success

* If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation

So, be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will reap later.
