In my staff training seminar, Developing Supervisors and Managers, participants are asked to list the attributes of a person they consider their best supervisor. This is the composite list in no particular order:

* BUILDS TRUST IN RELATIONSHIPS
* CHALLENGES STAFF TO GROW
* INVESTS IN STAFF
* EARNS HIS/HER POSITION
* IS OPEN TO CHANGE
* HAS A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
* LEADS BY EXAMPLE
* IS ENTHUSIASTIC
* IS PATIENT
* IS A TEAM BUILDER
* IS KNOWLEDGEABLE
* BUILDS OTHERS UP
* IS A GOOD COMMUNICATOR

* SUPERVISES ACCORDING TO INDIVIDUAL NEEDS
* IS A DECISION-MAKER

Something to Add
Another thing to consider is the maturity of the team. An immature team will require the training and coaching you describe, but that kind of behavior can be viewed as meddlesome and "micro managing" by a mature team.
For me, one of the marks of a good supervisor is that they are agile. They assess their team and the situation and change their management style to suit both.
