Word has it from many of our readers around the country that they have secured new office leases this year--renegotiated current spaces and moves to new digs.  Even markets that are doing well (in comparison) with commercial property occupancy rates, such as Houston and Washington D.C., are only reporting three-percent average increases over last year.
 

My favorite professor in college was also David Letterman’s mentor years before me. Letterman once said, “There's no business like show business, but there are several businesses like accounting.” I suppose that’s true. Accounting is pretty much the backbone to everything in business.

Is the Letterman mess the equivalent of the Enron debacle? It’s something to debate around the office water cooler, perhaps.

Bob Newhart, one of my favorite comedians, once said: “I was never a Certified Public Accountant. I just had a degree in accounting. It would require passing a test, which I would not have been able to do.” When Newhart was riding high in TV, I suspect that quote popped into a few heads upon taking the CPA exam.
