"Doing Good " is Great for Everyone!

Yesterday our firm, Sobel & Co., closed for the entire day while the partners and staff spent time at one of our nonprofit clients, The Cerebral Palsy Association in Edison, NJ, assisting them with running their annual school carnival. Our summer interns worked on this philanthropic project, arranging the event and building enthusiasm within the firm. We raised over $4500 and donated our time - but at the end of the day we realized that we got much more than we gave.

Spending a day with young people who are so challenged  reminded us all of how lucky we are.  We immediately understood that the smiles on the faces of the children as they got their faces painted, played ring toss or even watched our partners in the Dunk Tank, had much more value than a new referral, press coverage, or a pipeline meeting discussion.  The joy we brought to the students and their aides made us see everything through a new lens.

So the day brought us increased camaraderie within our own staff; it brought us a stronger tie to our client; it brought us a sense of purpose; and it gave us an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to our local community.

Before the summer ends, think about a way that you can engage your firm in some local volunteer capacity. It is worth it!  Frankly, it feels good to do good.
