Disconnect to Connect

I just watched a powerful YouTube clip about disconnecting from your electronics in order to connect with the people around you.  I then read a book this weekend titled "Quiet' about the power of being an introvert and how many with this personality attribute find the power of their voice in social media - therefore in the ability to connect electronically.  Today, I am sitting in an airport and I am looking around at the many people surrounding me and I count 25 within eyesight and 24 are connected to an electronic device of some kind - myself included!

How do we navigate this thing called connections when it seems that we are on a natural path to disconnect from in-person, face-to-face conversation and connect in a virtual world?  I believe it is like most things in our life, balance is the key.  Here are a few examples of how I am trying to find my balance:

1)  This weekend at a family event we banned all technology from the dinner table and then my husband and I planned the food, drink and a game of “Shut the Box” to hold our families attention.  We had a tremendous hour of just interacting together, and no one missed their phones.  The reality is that if we had not intentionally planned for our interaction - it would not have happened.

2)  My husband and I have also been working hard to get back into shape and we take a long walk together whenever we can.  No phones are allowed.  It is our time to talk and share what is going on in the world and in our lives.

3)  I have a terrific team at Boomer Consulting, Inc. and we hold a meeting quarterly where the entire team gets together in one room for a full day and we update our strategic plan, talk about our life events and all in all, just get to know each other again.  It is an event.  It is powerful. It is free of conversations using electronics.

I want to hear from you.  What are you doing to disconnect so that you can connect in your life?  Send me your suggestions so that I can share them in a future column with this audience.  I'll bet that collaboratively we can help others find balance in their lives.
