Abalos & Associates, PLLC, a CPA firm which recently merged with REDW and Miller, Allen & Co., P.C. to create one of the largest financial services firms in the Southwest, has announced that Patricia von Kolen, CPA, has joined the firm as senior tax accountant. In this position, she will be in charge of preparing individual and small business tax returns. Prior to joining the firm, von Kolen worked in both public and industry accounting positions. She brings more than eight years of experience in the accounting industry and six years of experience in tax to her new position. Von Kolen obtained a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in taxation from Arizona State University.

Elliott Davis, PLLC, an accounting, tax, and consulting services firm in the Southeast, announced the addition of Thiru Govender, shareholder, and Erin Liu, senior accountant, to the firm's International Services practice. Both professionals are based in Charlotte, North Carolina.
 
A CPA with seventeen years of public accounting experience, Govender provides assurance services to both privately held and SEC reporting companies, focusing on multinational enterprises. He advises clients on international accounting and compliance issues across a wide range of industry sectors, including manufacturing and distribution, technology, and retail. Govender also has extensive experience coordinating foreign statutory audits as well as performance of US GAAP and SOX 404 procedures overseas. He holds an MBA and BBA in accounting from St. Bonaventure University.
 
Liu will provide tax services to clients across various industries, concentrating on domestic tax compliance and international tax consulting. She speaks both Chinese Mandarin and English fluently. Prior to joining Elliott Davis, Liu was a tax senior at a Big Four accounting firm in New York. She holds a Master of Accountancy from the University of Florida and a BBA from the Business College of Beijing.

Hartman Leito & Bolt, LLP (HLB), a full-service accounting and consulting firm, is proud to announce Alan Nelson as director of litigation support and forensic services. In this newly created role, Nelson will lead HLB's litigation support, forensic and investigative accounting, and computer forensics technology consulting services. He is based out of HLB's Dallas office.
 
Prior to his appointment as director at HLB, Nelson served as a senior manager at Weaver, where he provided forensic accounting services to law firms and their clients. Before Weaver, Nelson was a shareholder at Brown & Nelson, P.C., where he led investigative accounting services, such as internal and external investigations, healthcare fraud, and transaction analysis, among others. 
 
Nelson earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from Western Michigan University and is a certified public accountant in Texas. In addition, he holds a certification in financial forensics.

The Los Angeles, California, CPA firm of Kellogg & Andelson (K-A) has acquired the long-standing CPA firm of Herfordt Shelton Mertens & Couch (Herfordt et al.) in Kansas City. The new firm is Walters McCann Fanska, LLC.
 
Walters McCann Fanska leverages off of the expertise of Chuck McCann, former managing partner of Mayer Hoffman McCann; K-A owner Jim Walters; K-A CEO Christian Payne; and partners in Los Angeles and San Diego. Janet Fanska, who has been with Herfordt et al. for over thirty years, will remain with the new firm. 
 
McCann and Fanska will be overseeing the firm and performing CPA services from the Mission, Kansas, office. The firm will keep the Herfordt et al. Independence, Missouri, office and add expertise to that area as partner, Otto Mertens, CPA, will retire in 2013. 
 
The firm offers services in the areas of tax, accounting and auditing, general business consulting, financial planning, estate tax planning, business valuations, and other services typically provided to closely held businesses.

KPMG LLP, an audit, tax, and advisory firm, has announced that Cathy Mauer and Dan Prager have rejoined the firm. 
 
Cathy Mauer has rejoined as a principal in the International Executive Services (IES) practice. Based in Chicago, she will serve as IES Business Unit Lead for the Chicago Metro and Wisconsin markets. Prior to rejoining KPMG, Mauer served as an IES partner at another Big Four firm and as the principal accounting and tax officer at Quiznos. Earlier in her career, she worked at Newmont Mining Corporation and served as a tax partner with KPMG's IES practice. Mauer earned a BS degree in business administration from Valparaiso University in Indiana and Juris Doctor and Master of Laws degrees in taxation from the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law.
 
Dan Prager has rejoined as a managing director in the Federal Tax practice. Based in Los Angeles, he will focus on serving Alternative Investment Fund clients in the West. Before returning to KPMG, Prager served as head of corporate finance for Telfónica CR, an integrated telecommunications operator in the Czech Republic. Prior to that, he served as vice president of tax and treasury for Ares Management LLC. Earlier in his career, Prager served in several capacities at KPMG, including as a director in the Mergers and Acquisitions Tax practice. Prager holds a BS degree in international relations and a Master of Business in Taxation from the University of Southern California.

The public accounting and advisory firm of Louis T. Roth & Co. is pleased to announce the addition of Michael Baker and Patrick McMurray.
 
Baker joins the firm as a staff accountant. In his new role, he will be providing comprehensive accounting and consulting services to the firm's clients. Baker previously served as an actuarial analyst at Mercer for six years. He graduated from Bellarmine University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. 
 
As the executive office manager, McMurray is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the firm. Specifically, he is involved in firm-wide policy setting, problem solving, and daily decision making. In addition, McMurray is responsible for managing the firm's bookkeeping, payroll, and personnel files. Prior to joining the firm, he was a director of administrative services and accounting at The Dream Factory. McMurray received his Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University. In addition, he received his undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Illinois.

Cecelia Garber of Marcum LLP has been honored with a Key Partners Award in recognition of her leadership as one of South Florida's leading CPAs. Garber is partner-in-charge of the Florida region for Marcum, a national accounting and advisory firm. The award was presented by South Florida Business Journal and Linq Financial. 
 
The Key Partners Awards recognize South Florida's top attorneys and accountants, based on demonstrated success over the past twelve to eighteen months. According to the Business Journal's website, "The honorees have proven, by reputation and results, that they are the best in their field, providing the highest quality of service to their clients and, at the same time, exhibiting the highest levels of professionalism and ethics."
 
Garber is a forensic accounting specialist and a partner in Marcum LLP's Advisory Services Division. She represents both business and individual clients in connection with income tax planning and compliance, preparation of financial statements, general accounting and auditing, management consulting services, and IRS representation. She also provides litigation support services in the bankruptcy, forensic, income tax, and family law areas. Certified in business valuation and forensic financial analysis, Garber frequently serves as an expert witness in court systems through South Florida.

President and CEO of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA) Peggy Dzierzawski, CAE, will be one of the recipients of the Walsh College Jeffery W. Barry Award for Educational Excellence and Community Service. The award will be presented at the Walsh College annual Leadership Awards Dinner on Saturday, November 10. 
 
This most prestigious award, named after long-time Walsh College President Jeffery W. Barry, goes to individuals who demonstrate leadership in their profession and a commitment to the community through philanthropic efforts. 
 
Dzierzawski began her career at the MACPA in 1974 and worked in every department by 1992, when she was named deputy executive director. She became the organization's president in 1997. As president, her many accomplishments have included: working with Governor Snyder, who is a CPA, helping to shape regulatory and legislative initiatives affecting the profession; creating nonprofit partnerships for CPA volunteers; revamping the MACPA's governance and organizational structure; overhauling Michigan's public accounting statute; and working to pass certified public accountant license mobility legislation.
 
"We are so proud of Peggy Dzierzawski," said Judith Trepeck, CPA, CGMA, chief operating officer of the MACPA. "She has committed herself to this MACPA for nearly four decades and it is a pleasure to see all of her hard work rewarded."
 
MACPA Board Chair Randy Paschke praised Dzierzawski's leadership abilities.
"Peggy understands the importance of building relationships with both business and community leaders, and she is such a terrific advocate for the CPA profession and the organization," said Paschke. 
 
During Dzierzawski's tenure as president and CEO, the MACPA and its members have partnered with many community-minded organizations. These include the Accounting Aid Society for which MACPA members prepare income tax returns for low-income families. For eight years, the association has contributed to the efforts to help find a cure for breast cancer through its participation with the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure. The association is also a strong supporter of efforts to improve financial literacy among young and old alike. The MACPA Financial Literacy Task Force worked with Hospice of Michigan to create a booklet for families to utilize during end of life planning for loved ones. 
 
Dzierzawski, who received the prestigious Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation from the American Society of Association Executives before becoming president of the MACPA, was inducted, in 2006, into the Hall of Fame of the Michigan Society of Association Executives (MSAE), where she was past chairman and the recipient of its inaugural Strategic Association Leader Award.
 
She attended Oakland University and the Institute for Organization Management at Notre Dame, Indiana. She has been named as one of the Most Influential Women by Crain's Detroit Business and as a Corp! magazine Top Michigan Business Woman.

The partners of CPA firm Sisterson & Co. LLP have elected Bradley P. Lusk Managing Partner effective January 1, 2013. Lusk will succeed William E. Troup, who has served as managing partner since 1997. Troup has announced his impending retirement from the firm but will continue in his role as Assurance Services partner until that time.
 
Lusk joined Sisterson in 1991 after spending six years at a national CPA firm. He provides accounting and auditing services to privately owned, middle market clients in a variety of industries. Lusk currently leads Sisterson's not-for-profit sector, which has been a significant area of growth for the firm over the last two decades. In addition, he acts as cochair of Sisterson's Manufacturing and Distribution practice area. Lusk's responsibilities have also included leading the Firm's quality control program, continuing education, and staff recruitment. Lusk is a CPA licensed in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He received his BS in business administration and accounting from West Virginia University.

Wipfli LLP (Wipfli) announced it has expanded its Business Valuation, Litigation, and Transaction Support Services Practice with the recent addition of Terry Hoover, CPA, as director.
 
Hoover brings to Wipfli more than twenty-seven years of experience in deal initiation and intermediary services, transaction structure, transaction negotiation, finance sourcing, valuation consultation, and litigation support services. Prior to joining Wipfli, Hoover worked as a director in the Valuation and Litigation Support Practice of Baker Tilly Virchow Krause. Hoover holds a Master of Science in Taxation from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
