Company Announcements: Week of November 18, 2013

Ed Offterdinger, executive managing partner of Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly), one of the top twenty largest accounting and advisory firms in the country, has been selected by the Washington Business Journal as one of the region's most influential business leaders.
This year's Power 100 is the second annual list compiled by the Washington Business Journal, whose criteria included leaders who were "influential, respected and able to get things done."
Offterdinger's selection was due in part to his leadership in a recent merger with New York firm Holtz Rubenstein Reminick LLP that expanded Baker Tilly's East Coast footprint, bolstering the number of professionals to 1,600 and revenues to more than $300 million. In addition to overseeing the firm's east region, he also chairs the management committee and takes a leadership role in many philanthropic endeavors.
Offterdinger and the other honorees were recognized at a reception on November 4, 2013, at the Metropolitan Club.

- Carole Barker, a senior consultant, and Michele Staples, a manager, have joined the Health Care/Not-for-Profit Group in the Portland office.
- Philip Huntley, a consultant, joins the firm's Government Consulting Group in the Portland office.
- Shareen Palmacci has joined BerryDunn as a staff accountant in the Bangor office.
- Dave Erb, a principal, has become the practice group leader of BerryDunn's Tax Consulting and Compliance Group.
- Renee Bishop, a principal, has become the practice group leader of BerryDunn's Heath Care and Not-for-Profit Group.

CBIZ and Mayer Hoffman McCann P.C. (MHM) are excited to announce that David (Dave) Sibits and Ernest (Ernie) F. Baugh, Jr. have recently been named as recipients of the AICPA Sustained Contribution Award.
This award, which was created three years ago, is in recognition of long-standing commitment and dedication to the AICPA and the accounting profession through volunteer service. Only eighteen CPAs across the country were chosen for this award. It highlights those individuals who have spent significant time volunteering on AICPA committees, task forces, or panels. All recipients have been actively involved in these roles for over twenty years and at one time have led one of these volunteer groups.
Sibits has served as the president of CBIZ's Financial Services practice since joining the company in 2007. Prior to joining CBIZ, Sibits had over thirty years in the profession as a partner in other CPA firms. He originally practiced in the tax area. He has served the AICPA in various capacities beginning with a stint as the chairperson of the Special Entities and Industries Subcommittee. That role ultimately led to his becoming a member of the Tax Executive Committee. His professional involvement expanded beyond the taxation field with the appointment to the management of an accounting practice committee as well as the AICPA Nominating Committee. Sibits currently participates in the AICPA Major Firms Group where his involvement dates back to 1989.
Baugh serves as Mayer Hoffman McCann's national director of professional standards. He leads the firm's Professional Standards Group, which provides consultations to engagement teams on complex accounting and auditing matters, and he is a member of the firm's board of directors and Executive Committee. While he joined MHM in 2004, Baugh has over forty years of public accounting experience, primarily being a resource to other professionals serving clients. In his extensive career history, he has worked with standard setting bodies of the accounting and auditing profession to drive for continuous improvement. He has served as a member of the AICPA's Auditing Standards Board, Governing Council, Accounting Standards Executive Committee, SEC Regulations Committee, and PCPS Technical Issues Committee. In addition to other roles held within AICPA committees, he has served as a member of the PCAOB's Standing Advisory Group and FASB's Emerging Issues Task Force. Ernie has also served as the president of the Tennessee Society of CPAs (TSCPA) as well as president of the Chattanooga Chapter of the TSCPA.
Karin French, national managing partner of international standards for Grant Thornton LLP, has been appointed to the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) for a three-year term beginning January 1.
An independent standard-setting body, the IAASB serves the public interest by setting high-quality international standards for auditing quality control, review, assurance, and related services, and by facilitating the convergence of international and national standards.In doing so, the IAASB enhances the quality and uniformity of practice throughout the world and strengthens public confidence in the global auditing and assurance profession.
French has more than twenty-five years of experience and previously served as the national managing partner and the assistant national managing partner of Grant Thornton's Professional Standards Group and as the partner-in-charge of SEC and Regulatory Matters. She also represents Grant Thornton on the Standards Working Group, a subcommittee of the Global Public Policy Committee, and has served on numerous committees and task forces, including the Professional Practice Executive Committee, sponsored by the Center for Audit Quality – a public policy organization dedicated to enhancing investor confidence and public trust in the global capital markets.
She is a certified public accountant in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Virginia, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and has served on the Accounting Standards Executive Committee.
French received a master's degree in accounting management and administrative services from the University of Texas at Dallas and a bachelor's degree in education from Stephen F. Austin State University.
Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, P.A., a Baltimore-based CPA and consulting firm, is pleased to announce that Anusone Saenphimmachak joined its Technology Solutions Group as a Microsoft Dynamics GP systems consultant.
Saenphimmachak earned a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from University of Phoenix. He holds the GP 2010 Installation and Configuration certification and is a certified SQL specialist.
Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates also announced that Heather Lifshitz joined the firm's Technology Solutions Group as an administrative assistant.
Lifshitz will provide sales support to the team, preparing price quotes and proposals and handling purchasing and billing. She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Towson University.
The certified public accounting firm of Katz, Sapper & Miller has been awarded INSIDE Public Accounting's (IPA) Pyramid Award for 2013. Now in its third year, the Pyramid Awards recognize three of the country's "Best of the Best" accounting firms in the nation.
IPA's Best of the Best is an annual list of those accounting firms that have delivered exceptional financial and operational performance in the most recent fiscal year. Drummonds is the partner-in-charge of Tax Services at LBMC and has extensive experience in delivering value-added tax services to clients in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, retail and distribution, technology, and healthcare. Over the course of his twenty-four year career, he has coordinated tax services to over twenty public companies and has been involved with numerous venture capital transactions and SEC filings. He has significant experience in mergers and acquisitions, tax accounting issues, state and local tax planning, and tax outsourcing engagements.
Eli brings over twenty-five years of experience in public accounting and healthcare to his role as leader of LBMC's Healthcare Practice. He is responsible for the firm's strategic direction, development of solutions, and service delivery to address the ever-changing needs of the healthcare industry. He is a healthcare partner in the accounting and assurance practice, serving on a number of healthcare engagements, which include for-profit and not-for-profit healthcare organizations.
McDougal is the partner-in-charge of Accounting and Assurance services and leader of LBMC's Manufacturing and Distribution practice. He has diversified experience in a variety of industries, including manufacturing and distribution, retail, employee benefit plans, investment partnerships, not-for-profit organizations, insurance, and Sarbanes Oxley internal control matters.

Zief is a REIT expert with extensive transactional expertise in partnership taxation issues, structuring real estate ownership vehicles, IPOs, and secondary offerings. He is also coauthor of the Real Estate Investment Trust Handbook, which has been published annually since 1987.
During his career, Zief has held positions at FTI Consulting as a managing director in REIT and Tax Services, KPMG LLP as director in Real Estate Services, and at the law firm of White & Case LLP, where he was chairman of the Real Estate Tax Group.
