Friedman LLP recently appointed three principals to its New York and East Hanover offices, adding specialized experience to the firm's tax and audit departments. George Fanouakis, CPA, Michael J. Greenwald, MPPM, CPA, and Justin Van Fleet assume their new titles on July 1.
Fanourakis, principal at Friedman LLP's New York office, works closely with apparel manufacturers as well as clients in the import/export, insurance, real estate/hospitality, and services industries. In addition to being involved in all phases of client accounting and tax work, his experience includes reviewing operations to establish profitability and benchmarks for industry comparison; performing due diligence for purposes of growth and expansion; and setting up control systems for cash flow, sales, and inventory. He has a BS in Accounting from New York University.
Greenwald, principal at Friedman LLP's New York and East Hanover offices and Business Entity Tax Practice Leader, has over thirty years of experience in public accounting. He has served clients in a variety of industries, including financial services, technology and media, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, private equity, real estate, construction, and professional services. Greenwald received a BA in the Study of the City from Yale University and an MPPM from the Yale School of Management.
Van Fleet, principal at Friedman LLP's East Hanover office, has over eight years of experience serving clients in a range of industries, including manufacturing and distribution, telecommunications, technology, and other diversified industries. He has developed a specialty in analyzing complex equity instruments, including preferred stock, convertible debt, warrants, share-based compensation, and other assorted financial instruments. Van Fleet received a BS in Accounting from the State University of New York at New Paltz.
Grant Thornton LLP has relocated its Boston office to 75 State Street. The total space leased is 41,369 square feet. June 25 was the first day in the new office for Grant Thornton's more than 175 employees. The new space replaces the firm's previous office location at 226 Causeway Street in Boston.
The new space is designed to support employee collaboration and innovation. All workspaces have access to natural light as well as modern conference and team rooms, which include the most current AV and video conferencing capabilities. The new space is able to accommodate more than 300 employees and was designed to reduce Grant Thornton's carbon footprint. The newly renovated space is seeking LEED Gold certification.
Lattimore Black Morgan & Cain, PC (LBMC), one of the Southeast's largest accounting and business consulting firms, has added coding consultant Jenny Harvey to its Knoxville office.
Harvey has joined the Healthcare Consulting division, bringing with her a wealth of medical coding experience. Originally from Knoxville, she previously worked as coding consultant for Lexicode Corporation. She brings a solid foundation of knowledge of the ever-changing healthcare environment, including holding the following certifications: AHIMA Approved ICD-10 Trainer, Registered Health Information Technician, Certified Professional Coder, Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality, and Certified Pharmacy Technician. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Tennessee Association for HealthCare Quality.
Morrison & Foerster state and local tax (SALT) lawyer Roberta Moseley Nero has been appointed by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to fill a commissioner's seat on the New York State Tax Appeals Tribunal. Moseley Nero's appointment was confirmed by the New York State Senate on June 19. She is actually returning to the Tribunal, where she previously served for twelve years, including a long stint as a practicing administrative law judge on tax matters.
At Morrison & Foerster, where she was of counsel since 2001, Moseley Nero concentrated on SALT litigation and planning. She has been practicing in the SALT field since 1982 when she joined the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance as an assistant deputy counsel. She then joined the Division of Tax Appeals as secretary to the Tribunal and served as a tax law judge, hearing and deciding cases involving all New York State taxes, including corporate, sales, and personal income taxes. She has been recommended by Legal 500 for her "deep understanding" of state tax matters.
Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC announced that Deborah L. Meckley recently earned the QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification from Intuit's Certified ProAdvisor program. The QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification is awarded by Intuit to accounting professional who have a solid understanding of accounting principles and who have a fundamental knowledge of QuickBooks software. Certification is granted upon successful completion of a certification exam.
Meckley joined the firm in 2000 and provides bookkeeping services for local businesses in various industries, including retail, health care, and nonprofit entities. She also assists clients with QuickBooks installation, support, and training.
For eight years, Virginia Business and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) have teamed up to recognize the thousands of extraordinary CPAs who work in Virginia. The prestigious Virginia CFO Awards program was developed to honor CFOs, or those holding equivalent positions, whose ingenuity and dedication have led to success for their companies, their staff, and their professional careers.
More than thirty finalists and top winners were announced at the awards ceremony June 20 at the historic Jefferson Hotel in Richmond in the following categories: public company, small private company, large private company, small nonprofit, and large nonprofit.
The VSCPA congratulates its members Stephen Carroll, CPA, of Health Diagnostic Laboratory in Richmond, who won in the large private companies category, and Gary Ometer, CPA, of the Virginia College Savings Plan in North Chesterfield, who won in the small nonprofit organizations category.

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) Educational Foundation recently selected its college scholarship recipients for the 2013-2014 academic year. The VSCPA Educational Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting business and accounting education, rewarding academic excellence, and encouraging students to pursue promising careers as CPAs.
This year, the foundation awarded $43,250 in undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and minority scholarships to twenty-three accounting college students across Virginia. The Foundation awarded eleven named scholarships.
Scholarship applicants must be currently enrolled or have been accepted in an accounting program at a Virginia college or university. Other selection criteria for the awards include overall academic performance, entry essay, faculty recommendation(s), and community and/or extracurricular activities.
