BDO USA, LLP announced that Grand Rapids-based assurance director, Patricia Duperron, has been appointed to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) State and Local Government Expert Panel. Duperron's appointment is a one-year term. In this role, she will be responsible for identifying state and local government financial reporting and auditing issues and working with appropriate bodies for resolutions benefiting the public interest.
Duperron has twenty-one years of experience in public accounting and has worked extensively with townships, cities, counties, schools, and other governmental entities as well as various businesses and nonprofit organizations. She also has vast experience with transit authorities, public utilities, airports, convention/arena authorities, biosolids authorities, governmental pension plans, and various tax increment financing authorities.
Duperron received a BBA in accounting from the University of Michigan. She received a Certificate of Achievement from the AICPA for successful completion of the Governmental Accounting and Auditing Program.
The California Board of Accountancy (CBA) elected new leadership at its meeting on November 16, 2012, in San Jose. Leslie LaManna, CPA, was elected president of the CBA, Michael Savoy, CPA, as vice president, and Kitak (K.T.) Leung, CPA, as secretary/treasurer.
LaManna was appointed to the CBA by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in January 2007. She previously served as vice president and secretary/treasurer of the CBA and president of the San Diego Chapter of the California Society of CPAs. LaManna also served as adjunct professor in accounting for the University of California, San Diego Extension. She is currently a partner in the public accounting firm of LaManna & LaManna, CPAs.
Savoy was appointed to the CBA by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in December 2010 and recently served as secretary/treasurer of the CBA. He also serves on various CBA committees. He is the immediate past chairman of the board of the Americas Region of BKR International; a member of the finance committee, executive committee, and member of the board of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce; and a member of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan Association. Savoy is managing director at Gumbiner Savett Inc. and was previously a partner at Savoy & Colin.
Leung was appointed to the CBA Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in December 2010 and serves on various CBA committees. He currently serves as principal of Leung Accountancy Corporation. He previously served as manager of several investment groups as well as principal of Leung and Wong Accountancy Group and Leung and Associates. Leung also serves on the boards of other various philanthropic and business organizations.
Grant Thornton LLP announced the appointment of James A. Peko as the new national managing principal of the Corporate Advisory & Restructuring Services practice.
Peko has more than twenty-four years' experience in capital markets and restructuring, serving companies in transition for the last twelve years. He has been a principal with Grant Thornton for more than six years and currently serves as a principal in the Corporate Advisory & Restructuring Services practice. His previous experience includes serving as a first vice president in the corporate finance group at the Nikko Securities Co. International Inc., where he managed more than 100 financings for issuers, including Disney, Hewlett Packard, the entity formerly known as General Motors Acceptance Corporation, Ford Motor Credit Corporation, Intel Corporation, Argentina, Columbia, Mexico and Uruguay.
In addition, Peko is a member of the Association of Insolvency & Restructuring Advisors, CFA Institute, Turnaround Management Association, and the American Bankruptcy Institute for which he also serves as an editor of its Financial Advisor and Investment Banking Committee Newsletter. He holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from St. Peter's College and a master's in business administration from Fordham University.
Peko is also a chartered financial analyst, certified insolvency and restructuring advisor, holds a certification in distressed business valuation, and is a FINRA general securities registered representative - Series 7.
KPMG LLP was cited as a Leader in the "Forrester Wave: Business Intelligence (BI) Services Providers, Q4 2012" report, which examined the offerings and capabilities of twelve organizations.
The report pointed to KPMG as having "a strong technology advisory practice" and went on to say that KPMG is "a global leader" in advisory and consulting services related to BI and analytics, with "significant focus on analytics and decision support, performance and risk, and information management."
Steve Lis, a KPMG partner and leader of the US firm's Management Consulting Group, said the member firms of KPMG International have a strategic focus on helping clients improve their ability to manage and leverage their data.
"We are working to help companies focus first on their desired business outcomes, and aim for precision and relevance in the data so that it becomes actionable intelligence," said Lis. Business intelligence and data and analytics capabilities have quickly changed from a standalone technology solution to standard operating procedure for forward-thinking executives."
KPMG LLP has named Joe Norville to serve as West Region Managing Partner - Tax, succeeding Laura Newinski, who was recently appointed National Managing Partner - Tax.
Norville previously served as tax partner in charge for KPMG's Dallas/Denver Business Unit. With nearly twenty-seven years of federal tax experience, he has served many of the firm's marquee clients in the retail and private equity space. Norville joined the KPMG partnership in 2002. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin and a Master of Taxation from Baylor University.
Lattimore Black Morgan & Cain, PC (LBMC) has added Mindy Vail in its Brentwood (Nashville) office as e-marketing/web coordinator in the Shared Services Marketing Department.
She previously worked with Community Health Systems (CHS) as a website developer and at the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) as a webmaster. Originally from Mayfield, Kentucky, Mindy is a graduate of Murray State University where she received a BS in business.
RubinBrown team member Patrick Amos, CPA, recently was recognized by the Kansas State Board of Accountancy for having the third highest score out of the top ten CPA exam scores throughout the state of Kansas. Amos is a graduate of Kansas State University - Manhattan. Currently, he is an instructor for Rockhurst University, teaching an introductory accounting class.
The public accounting and business advisory firm of Vrakas/Blum announced the addition of Goran Vukovic and Christopher Marks to the firm as staff accountants.
Goran is a 2011 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukie with a Bachelor of Business Administration, and a 2012 graduate with a Master of Science in Management. He began his career at Robert W. Baird as an intern and will join Vrakas/Blum as a staff accountant in the Audit and Tax department.
A 2012 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, with a Master of Professional Accountancy, Marks also joins the firm as a staff accountant in the Audit and Tax department. He has recently completed all requirements to earn his CPA designation and previously served as an intern with Vrakas/Blum prior to being offered a full-time position.
Wipfli LLP (Wipfli) announced that Wipfli Partner Bob Cedergren and Manager Jay Malmquist have completed the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Certified Sustainability Reporting course.
GRI is a nonprofit organization that promotes economic, environmental, and social responsibility. The organization produces a comprehensive sustainability reporting framework that is widely used around the world to enable greater organizational transparency. The framework, including the reporting guidelines, sets out the principles and indicators organizations can use to report their economic, environmental, and social performance. Wipfli utilizes the GRI framework in the firm's sustainability reporting.

He also works with businesses who are seeking sustainability for their business. Cedergren is also a frequent speaker and author on risk management-related topics including risk assessments, sustainability, business continuity planning, and managing internal controls.
As a manager in Wipfli LLP's risk advisory and forensic services practice, Malmquist specializes in information technology (IT), information security and risk identification, assessment, and mitigation, and sustainability. With more than twenty years of experience, Malmquist advises clients on complex regulations and technical requirements in a manner that simplifies and tailors material for easy understanding.
