Disability insurance is one of those items many people say they don't need--unless something were to go terribly wrong. While many people have disability coverage through their employers, analysts say this isn't enough coverage (usually only half of a monthly salary, and with a cap of $5,000) based on what most of us earn.
How do you find disability insurance that matches your needs?
Finding carriers isn't as easy as it used to be. Two decades ago, there were more than 200 carriers, while today, there are only about 40. You could check with your life insurance broker, but you can also find a wealth of information on the Internet. Online, you can compare policies and premiums, and may even get more coverage for much less money.
Smart Money magazine has put together a list of online sources. Some offer direct quotes, while others serve as brokers for other companies.
