We all know that the competition is fierce out there in corporate America. So fierce that many companies are having their employees sign non-compete contracts as soon as they arrive. As an employee you need to make yourself completely clear of what the contract consists of and decide whether it’s for you.
Make sure you are comfortable with the length of time you would have to wait before finding new work. You even need to find out if you can take your Rolodex. For some companies, this could be worthy of a lawsuit.
In some instances, companies have been known to sue employees who go to a competitor even without the confines a contract, so even if you aren’t in a position that you have to sign a non-compete make sure you know the “unspoken” policy of that company. And watch out if you are a competitor hiring employees away. Companies have been known to sue another company for “stealing” staff.
