Another bunch of celebrities is in trouble with Uncle Sam over tax debt. Singer Kelly Rowland, Eddie Murphy's ex-wife, and actor Cary Elwes are the latest.
Singer and Grammy award winner Kelly Rowland is behind in taxes to the tune of nearly $100,000. To be exact, The Detroit News lists her tax debt at $98,634. The Internal Revenue Service filed a lien on November 8 with the New York City Register.
Ironically, Rowland's first big hit as a member of Destiny's Child with Beyoncé Knowles was the song Bills, Bills, Bills – a tune which might be haunting Rowland now. Since the group’s break-up, Rowland has released solo albums and done some acting, including playing the part of Martha Reeves in a 2003 episode of American Dreams. Reeves also was a tax delinquent.
Rowland, 29, owns an oceanfront home in Miami, and recently had success with her new song, When Loves Takes Over.
Nicole Murphy is a former model and ex-wife of Eddie Murphy. Nicole landed a settlement of $15 million when the couple divorced in 2006, and the IRS wants its share.
On October 6, the IRS filed a lien against Nicole with the Los Angeles County Recorder of Deeds in the amount of $210,957. The lien relates to taxes owed from 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. Also filed on October 6 in Los Angeles was a smaller lien for $3,731 relating to income from 2007 and 2008.
The former Mrs. Murphy lives in a 9,200-square-foot Spanish estate in Calabasas, California, for which she paid $7.5 million in 2006. The home is now for sale for just under $7 million.
British actor Cary Elwes, who starred in The Princess Bride, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and Saw, owes the IRS $68,648. A lien was filed against Elwes and his wife on September 13 with the Los Angeles County Recorder of Deeds.
Elwes, who lives in Malibu, California, also is in trouble for skipping out on hotel bills last year. He stayed at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, Michigan, last year during the filming of Little Murder. A lawsuit to recover the cost of the rooms and the meals for Elwes and others was filed in Oakland County, Michigan.
