Barnes Dennig, a Cincinnati, Ohio based CPA firm, is having their first annual Community Outreach Day on October 21, 2011. Local non-profits will submit nominations for service projects and from those nominations projects will be selected for inclusion.
The Community Outreach Day takes place on a workday and while employees are encouraged to participate, it isn't mandatory. It is also an employees-only event, designed to foster team-building and relationships among the staff. So far, the employees are approaching this opportunity enthusiastically and look forward to both the team-building and charitable aspects.
While Barnes Dennig has done other activities for team building in the past, a community outreach event like this takes team building to a whole new level. Bill Cloppert, managing director explained",We have heard of other organizations doing something similar to this to encourage teamwork, create a sense of belonging, provide an opportunity for people in the organization to get to know one another better and also help a non-profit organization."
"One of the primary focuses of Barnes Dennig's Emerging Professionals Group is to give back to the community", said Season Olson, senior accountant, member of the Not-For-Profit Client Service Team and Emerging Professionals Group. "This outreach project is an opportunity for us to be a part of something bigger than ourselves." The nominations are due August 1 and will be reviewed by the Emerging Professionals Group's Steering Committee who will then recommend projects to the Executive Committee. The nonprofit organizations selected will be announced on August 16.
The Barnes Dennig, First Annual Community Outreach Day is open to any service project. With so many different mission-based organizations in Cincinnati, the firm expects there to be a wide variety that are submitted and then selected and fulfilled.
Giving back to the community is nothing new for Barnes Dennig. The firm actively participates in their local United Way and Fine Arts Fund, has a team for the Making Strides Walk, and it participates in an annual holiday toy drive as well as other small activities throughout the year. They have also done a project with Habitat for Humanity.
"Our firm leadership thought it would be a great idea to do something together as a firm. This seemed like a natural next level for us. The non-profit community is very important to us", Brogan said.
On October 21, various firm members will be working together at several different sites, each with different objectives. At the end of the day they will meet up for a cook-out and evaluate the organizations that were served and what they were able to help the organizations achieve in a concerted effort.
In the end, Barnes Dennig's First Annual Community Outreach Day should benefit the firm and the community. The firm recognizes that this is a great opportunity for some of the younger and newer employees to work with team leaders and directors and work with them on a different level while providing a service to the community. The firm also hopes that this activity might encourage employees who are not currently involved in non-profit organizations to get involved.
