On December 9, Thomson Reuters announced it had acquired Emochila, a leading Web site design company that works specifically with accounting and tax firms. Thomson Reuters and Emochila will now work in collaboration to assist accounting professionals in creating and maintaining their Web sites.
According to Scott Fleszar, vice president strategic marketing, Tax & Accounting at Thomson Reuters, only 50 percent of accountants/accounting firms have Web sites. In today's environment, "accounting professionals need to be more focused on building their brands and interacting with their customers," Fleszar said. "Web sites are a great way to drive their presence and find new customers."
This joining of forces also means that small to medium-sized accounting firms, or individual accountants, will have greater flexibility when it comes to Web sites. The new Thomson Reuters team can create a Web site for customers from scratch, or accountants can use existing templates to create their own Web sites. Once Web sites are up and running, customers can maintain and refresh them themselves, or Thomson Reuters will do the work for them.
Emochila was founded by Chad Brubaker and Justin Curzi in 2003. Brubaker began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers, consulting with Fortune 500 companies on Internet security, and Curzi worked at a prominent Wall Street investment firm refining his financial analysis and consulting skills. After meeting each other on a beach in Rio and sharing their ideas, they asked themselves: "Why can't we build Web sites for small to mid-sized accounting firms that have all the bells and whistles of the Web sites of massive accounting firms?" With that mission in mind, they got to work.
Curzi and Brubaker believe that each accounting firm is unique, and its Web site is where that uniqueness can best be conveyed. Their goal has been "to level the playing field by offering a full suite of online tools and content, while also tailoring each site to accurately represent the individuality of the firm."
Brubaker said, "We've spent the last two years intentionally sharpening our focus on improving our Web hosting platform, knowing that this is where our core strengths lie. We made a conscious effort to do this while actively pursuing partnerships that would complement the product to perfectly match the needs of Emochila customers. We feel that the Thomson Reuters' acquisition is the perfect opportunity to take the product to the next level."

The Emochila team will continue to work from its San Francisco headquarters and coordinate its development, sales, and services activities with the Tax & Accounting offices in Dexter and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
