Transitioning from Corporate to Private Sector

If you had to choose your dream job, what would it be? For 48-year-old A. Lee Shull Jr., it was leaving behind the corporate life for private enterprise, although he retained his core competencies along the way.

Shull is director of operations for Resources Connection, a Santa Anna, CA-based company offering contract accounting assistance to companies and organizations. Resource Connection was started in 1996 by a former Deloitte & Touche executive. Shull is based in Pittsburgh, and runs that office for the company.

Shull has no regrets about leaving the corporate accounting arena; he spent 17 years with Rockwell International, and when Rockwell moved its headquarters to California, he resigned his position because he did not want to relocate. He spent a period of time evaluating what he wanted to do with his next venture, and eventually was recruited by Resoruces.

Shull put his family first in turning down the relocation, and in exchange, banked on his knowledge of acocunting and its related systems to enable him to make the transition.
