Last week I needed to set-up a conference call. To me, the process seemed unnecessarily difficult and costly: the conference call was expensive, needed to be scheduled with a telephone service operator in advance, and participants needed a special phone number and code to join the call. As I was setting all of this up, I kept thinking there must be a better service...
In fact, TelePost provides an innovative low-cost alternative for arranging a conference call. The TelePost system allows any individual to initiate a conference call--at any time--using a Web browser, with up to eight participants. TelePost's rates are attractive, and TelePost's Web site indicates that these rates are up to 87% less than the charges for conference calls managed by traditional providers such as AT&T, Sprint and MCI. This can quickly lead to savings in excess of $1000.
TelePost works as follows:
- The system requires that you have two separate telephone lines (one for your Internet connection and one for your standard dial-up telephone connection).
- You register with TelePost as a member and choose a monthly usage plan (which determines your costs). All conference calls are billed to the party that initiates the call.
- To initiate a conference call, you log into the Internet, and visit the TelePost Conference Center on the Web.
- The Conference Center manager on the Web allows you to store telephone numbers for individuals or groups that you frequently include in conference calls. Alternatively, you can enter the phone number of participants the Conference Center at the time of your call.
- At the Conference Center, you click on the phone icon next to the telephone number of a conference participant. After a brief period your regular telephone will ring (the one that is not your Internet connection) and so will that of your first participant. You have now started the conference call. (A TelePost conference call takes place over standard telephone lines. The Web is used solely by the conference initiator as a call management tool.)
- Using the Web based Conference Center, you can then select up to 6 additional phone numbers, click on them, and enable these individuals to join the call.
The TelePost system is terrific for relatively small groups that want to have frequent conference calls. For example, it seems to me that the system is ideal for a task force that wants to talk once a week, and can lead to tremendous cost savings.
A second benefit of the TelePost system is its potential for spontaneity. With TelePost, you can be talking with one individual and spontaneously decide to initiate a far larger group call.
The primary drawback of the TelePost phone conference system is that it is limited to eight participants (including the conference leader). Unfortunately, the TelePost service is not an available option for calls involving larger groups.
I strongly recommend that you investigate the TelePost system. If you are a frequent conference call participant, you can realize annual savings of thousands of dollars.
