The ability to attract, retain, and motivate employees, while balancing fiscal management issues, is no easy task for employers. That's why CBIZ, Inc. has taken to the blogosphere with the launch of the CBIZ Human Capitalizing blog.
The blog will focus on three main topic areas: benefits and wellness, employee management, and fiscal management. Concentrated focus on these areas will help employers understand critical management issues that relate to their own workforce and business.

Crowe Horwath LLP, a public accounting and consulting firm, has been recognized as one of the best places to work by programs in Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, and Ohio.
The awards are based, in part, on the work-life balance programs, compensation, benefits, and career development opportunities Crowe provides for its more than 2,500 personnel. These include Crowe's flexible work arrangements, road warrior benefits, women's programming, diversity and inclusion, personnel assistance and a variety of internal and external training and development courses.
During 2012, Crowe has received the following best places to work accolades:
Kentucky - Crowe, with offices in Louisville and Lexington, was named one of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky for the eighth consecutive year. The honor was presented by the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management State Council, Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, and Best Companies Group.
Michigan - For the eighth consecutive year, Crowe was named one of West Michigan's 101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For presented by the National Association of Business Resources and the Michigan Business and Professional Association. The firm has an office in Grand Rapids.
New Jersey - With an office in Livingston, Crowe was selected to the 2012 Best Places to Work in New Jersey list, presented by the New Jersey Business Journal and Best Companies Group. This is the fourth time in the past six years that Crowe has been named to the list.
Ohio ‒ For the seventh straight year, Crowe was named one of the Best Employers in Ohio by the Society for Human Resource Management - Ohio State Council and Best Companies Group. Crowe has offices in Cleveland and Columbus.
Five individuals from Crowe Horwath LLP have been recognized for their involvement in national programs. Twelve additional people were recognized by programs in California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio:
- Chuck Allen, CEO, was named to the 2011 National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) Directorship 100. Comprised of more than 11,000 members, the NACD recognizes the top 100 most influential people in corporate governance the boardroom.
- Brenda Torres, partner in the Audit and Financial Advisory practice in Crowe's South Bend, Indiana, office, was named the 2010 Influential Woman of the Year in the North Central Region by the American Society of Women Accountants and the American Women Society of CPAs. Brenda earned the prestigious award for her commitment to work-life balance and influence on others in the profession.
- Dorri McWhorter, partner in the Risk Consulting practice in Crowe's Chicago office, received the Young Professional Leadership Award from ATHENA International. The award honors outstanding women leaders of Chicago who demonstrate the highest levels of professional excellence, community giving, and actively assist women in realizing their full leadership potential.
- David Lifson, partner in the Tax practice of Crowe's New York office, received the Sustained Contribution Award from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). The award recognizes members who have contributed to the AICPA and CPA profession through their volunteer services.
- Michele Porfilio, assistant director in the People Services practice of Crowe's Oak Brook, Illinois, office, received the Strategic Leadership Award from the World HRD Congress. Michele received this award based on multiple competencies including strategic perspective, business goal management, risk management, team orientation and people management.
- Jay Mangel, partner in the Audit and Financial Advisory practice of Crowe's Los Angeles office, received the Most Trusted Advisor Award from the San Fernando Valley Business Journal. He was recognized for his commitment to high-quality service, longevity as a professional, and commitment to overall excellence.
- Cindy Kushner, partner in the Tax practice of Crowe's Fort Lauderdale office, received the 2011 Circle of Excellence Award as "Woman Entrepreneur," presented by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce's Women's Council. Kushner was recognized for her dedication and commitment to the community.
- Cindy Kushner also received the Key Partners Award from the South Florida Business Journal. The award was created to honor South Florida's top attorneys and accountants, based on demonstrated success over the past twelve to eighteen months.
- Deborah Garringer, partner, and Magda Farren, senior manager, both in the Audit and Financial Advisory practice in Crowe's Tampa office, were honorees of the Florida Institute of CPAs Women to Watch Awards. Garringer received the Established Leader Award, and Farren received the Emerging Leader Award.
- Jodi Kippe, partner in the Audit and Financial Advisory practice of Crowe's Fort Lauderdale office, received the Spirit of Leadership Award from the Women's Automotive Association. This award honors women who have shown outstanding leadership abilities in the automotive industry and the community.
- Kevin Wydra, partner in the Audit and Financial Advisory practice of Crowe's Oak Brook office, received a Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois CPA Society. This award is presented each year to individuals who have made considerable contributions to the society's efforts.
- Ann Lathrop, partner in the Marketing Development and Sales practice in Crowe's Indianapolis office, was named to the Indianapolis Business Journal's "Who's Who in Hospitality" list. She was recognized for being the first woman to become board president of the Marion County Capital Improvement Board and helping the organization through its deficit crisis.
- Ann Lathrop was also named a 2011 Woman of Influence by the Indianapolis Business Journal. She is the first woman to head the Capital Improvement Board and the city's first female controller.
- Mindy Herman, partner in the Performance practice in Crowe's Indianapolis office, won the 2011 Inspire Award. Presented by College Mentors for Kids, the Inspire Awards recognize individuals and businesses for mentoring in the workplace and in the community.
- Brenda Torres, partner in the Audit and Financial Advisory practice in Crowe's South Bend office, was named to the 2011 Forty under Forty Class, presented by the Young Professionals Network, in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County, the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, and the South Bend Tribune.
- Rhonda Huismann, senior manager in the Tax practice of Crowe's Grand Rapids office, received the annual School of Accounting Hall of Fame Award from Grand Valley State University (GVSU). She has been a liaison between Crowe and GVSU and is very active with recruiting events.
- Stephen Bedell, senior manager in the Tax practice of Crowe's Columbus office, was named one of Columbus' Forty under Forty for 2011 by Columbus Business First. The list honors individuals who have excelled in professional development, awards and recognition, and community involvement.
- Ben Borchers, senior staff in the Audit and Financial Advisory practice of Crowe's Columbus office, received the top award in the adult category at the LeaderSpark "Leaders Taking Flight" event. This award is presented based on dedication to mentoring youth and commitment to improving one's community.
Crowe Horwath LLP has released a new version of the Crowe Metals Industry Accelerator for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012. The newest update of the Crowe Accelerator works with Microsoft's latest generation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) technology, with processes that are specifically configured for the metals industry, including producers, processors, fabricators, and service centers.
"The Crowe Metals Industry Accelerator is the only flexible, scalable solution that addresses the specific needs of the metals industry within the highly popular new Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 platform," said Josh Cole, a principal in Crowe's Performance group. "The accelerator is pre-configured with metals functionality, which dramatically shortens implementation times and improves overall operating efficiency to help manufacturers achieve a better return on their technology investment."
According to Cole, most of the new elements are based on requests from metals manufacturers that Crowe has worked with. These features include the ability to:
- Optimize inventory through a cut plan workbench, a user interface that matches demand for cut sizes of bar, sheet, coil, etc., to available supplies of raw material and remnants.
- Transfer specifications between sales, purchase, and production transactions, including intercompany orders.
- Track inventory by quantity (pieces or feet), theoretical weight, and actual weight.
- Price in any convertible unit of measure, regardless of the unit by which an item is sold or inventoried.
- Factor dimensional transformation into routings.
- Automatically calculate the cost allocation for divergent (one-to-many) production.
Elliott Davis, LLC, an accounting, tax, and consulting services firms in the Southeast, is pleased to announce that shareholder Tim Grow has relocated to the firm's Charleston, South Carolina, office.
A CPA, Grow provides comprehensive assurance and management consulting services to clients in the construction, real estate, manufacturing, not-for-profit, assisted living, education, and government industry sectors. He has been with Elliott Davis for more than fifteen years and has worked in the firm's Myrtle Beach and Columbia, South Carolina, offices.

Jack O'Meara has rejoined KPMG LLP, the US audit, tax, and advisory firm, as a managing director in the firm's Economic and Valuation Services (EVS) practice. Based in the San Francisco office, O'Meara will focus on assisting clients on the West Coast with their evolving transfer pricing needs.
O'Meara rejoins KPMG from Grant Thornton, where he served as executive director of International Transfer Pricing Services. Earlier in his career, he was a senior manager in EVS at KPMG.
Lattimore Black Morgan & Cain, PC (LBMC), an accounting and business consulting firm in the Southeast, has added Carrie R. Wilson in its Brentwood (Nashville) office.
Wilson has joined the accounting firm in an administrative assistant position in the accounting and assurance services department. She brings over fifteen years of experience and most recently worked at the regional headquarters of Wal-Mart as a regional assistant. Wilson is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University.
Alan M. Willinger, CPA, JD, has been elected as a director of the Manhattan/Bronx Chapter of the New York Society of Certified Public Accountants for a two-year term expiring May 31, 2014.
Willinger is a partner in the Tax Department. His expertise encompasses the areas of individual, partnership, and corporate tax law, with particular emphasis on real estate entities and planning for closely held businesses and their owners. His other areas of specialization include real estate taxation, representation before the IRS and state and local agencies, preparation of ruling requests to the IRS, corporate restructuring and reorganizations, estate planning, and business succession planning.
He received his BA from New York University and his JD from Brooklyn Law School. He is admitted to the New York State Bar.
