More often than not the issue arises because someone gets hurt due to alcohol consumption in a work-related situation.
Employers could end up with legal troubles unless the company can show that it had no control over the situation and had no reason to assume it would occur. Most employers have been advised to set and communicate clear policies on the use of alcohol at company events.
If you plan on celebrating with your employees this year and alcohol will be part of the celebration, we suggest you contact your Human Resource Representative, or your attorney to find out if you can be held liable for the festivities. If you do not have a policy on alcohol at company events, it may be time to incorporate one now.
Note: The sample policy below provides general information regarding alcohol at work. Here is a sample to use.
Every employee of the Company/Firm assumes the responsibility to exercise common sense and restraint with regard to consumption of company provided alcoholic beverages. That means moderation in consumption, and avoidance of subsequent risky actions. Most definitely that means avoiding driving if intoxicated. It is best to not drive at all after drinking, even if not technically intoxicated. Let non-drinking spouses or other designated non drinkers do the driving.
