An accountant in the Cal State University-Hayward fund-raising department has been accused of embezzling $150,000 by exploiting a lack of internal controls at the school. The school claims the accountant, David Wright, stole cash and other items, including a personal computer.
A recent audit produced the trail of the accountant's activities, which included forging documents and making fraudulent disbursements. Findings from the audit have been turned over to the district attorney's office.
Mr. Wright was the accountant for the university's Educational Foundation, an organization that solicits and collects donations from alumni and grant makers.
"The campus has been working on improving accounting procedures so this won't happen again," stated Colleen Bentley-Adler, a spokeswoman for the CSU Chancellor's office.
